HBO "Big Love" Controversy - Mormon Response

Official Response from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

SALT LAKE CITY 9 March 2009 Like other large faith groups, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes finds itself on the receiving end of attention from Hollywood or Broadway, television series or books, and the news media. Sometimes depictions of the Church and its people are quite accurate. Sometimes the images are false or play to stereotypes. Occasionally, they are in appallingly bad taste.

As Catholics, Jews and Muslims have known for centuries, such attention is inevitable once an institution or faith group reaches a size or prominence sufficient to attract notice. Yet Latter-day Saints – sometimes known as Mormons - still wonder whether and how they should respond when news or entertainment media insensitively trivialize or misrepresent sacred beliefs or practices.

Church members are about to face that question again. Before the first season of the HBO series Big Love aired more than two years ago, the show’s creators and HBO executives assured the Church that the series wouldn’t be about Mormons. However, Internet references to Big Love indicate that more and more Mormon themes are now being woven into the show and that the characters are often unsympathetic figures who come across as narrow and self-righteous. And according to TV Guide, it now seems the show’s writers are to depict what they understand to be sacred temple ceremonies.

Certainly Church members are offended when their most sacred practices are misrepresented or presented without context or understanding. Last week some Church members began e-mail chains calling for cancellations of subscriptions to AOL, which, like HBO, is owned by Time Warner. Certainly such a boycott by hundreds of thousands of computer-savvy Latter-day Saints could have an economic impact on the company. Individual Latter-day Saints have the right to take such actions if they choose.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an institution does not call for boycotts. Such a step would simply generate the kind of controversy that the media loves and in the end would increase audiences for the series. As Elder M. Russell Ballard and Elder Robert D. Hales of the Council of the Twelve Apostles have both said recently, when expressing themselves in the public arena, Latter-day Saints should conduct themselves with dignity and thoughtfulness.

Not only is this the model that Jesus Christ taught and demonstrated in his own life, but it also reflects the reality of the strength and maturity of Church members today. As someone recently said, “This isn’t 1830, and there aren’t just six of us anymore.” In other words, with a global membership of thirteen and a half million there is no need to feel defensive when the Church is moving forward so rapidly. The Church’s strength is in its faithful members in 170-plus countries, and there is no evidence that extreme misrepresentations in the media that appeal only to a narrow audience have any long-term negative effect on the Church.

Examples:
  • During the Mitt Romney election campaign for the presidency of the United States, commentator Lawrence O’Donnell hurled abuse at the Church in a television moment that became known among many Church members as “the O’Donnell rant.” Today, his statements are remembered only as a testament to intolerance and ignorance. They had no effect on the Church that can be measured.

  • When the comedy writers for South Park produced a gross portrayal of Church history, individual Church members no doubt felt uncomfortable. But once again it inflicted no perceptible or lasting damage to a church that is growing by at least a quarter of a million new members every year.

  • When an independent film company produced a grossly distorted version of the Mountain Meadows Massacre two years ago, the Church ignored it. Perhaps partly as a result of that refusal to engender the controversy that the producers hoped for, the movie flopped at the box office and lost millions.

  • In recent months, some gay activists have barraged the media with accusations about “hateful” attitudes of Latter-day Saints in supporting Proposition 8 in California, which maintained the traditional definition of marriage. They even organized a protest march around the Salt Lake Temple. Again, the Church has refused to be goaded into a Mormons versus gays battle and has simply stated its position in tones that are reasonable and respectful. Meanwhile, missionary work and Church members in California remain as robust and vibrant as ever, and support for the Church has come from many unexpected quarters — including some former critics and other churches.

Now comes another series of Big Love, and despite earlier assurances from HBO it once again blurs the distinctions between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the show’s fictional non-Mormon characters and their practices. Such things say much more about the insensitivities of writers, producers and TV executives than they say about Latter-day Saints.

If the Church allowed critics and opponents to choose the ground on which its battles are fought, it would risk being distracted from the focus and mission it has pursued successfully for nearly 180 years. Instead, the Church itself will determine its own course as it continues to preach the restored gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world.

Tribute to President Gordon B. Hinckley

I'm going to miss President Hinckley tremendously - he passed away last night - but oh, what a wonderful reunion he must have had. We love you President Hinckley! I found this quote and it reminded me of him -- a straight arrow!
If you hold to high standards and try diligently to build your life on principles, you may well be labeled as a prude, a do-gooder, unsophisticated, square — a straight arrow . If they don't want you to be a straight arrow, then what would they have you be — lascivious, a do-badder, sinful, shapeless — a crooked arrow ? Can you imagine anything as useless as a crooked arrow? If you wanted to hit a target, reach a goal, predict a course of flight, which arrow would you pick? In working out his plans, do you imagine God picks crooked arrows?

Happy New Year!

It's been way too long since I've had time to blog. Working too hard. But this year I have set some really great personal and business goals -- work hard, play hard, and relax. Life is too short to get stressed out.

My team at LDSAudio.com has been great -- working really hard to keep the company alive. It looks like we have been able to overcome the huge obstacles we were facing -- at least to the point that we are dedicated to keeping the company moving forward. If you love uplifting LDS music, audiobooks, and LDS MP3s -- check us out!

Mitt Romney - Chances a Mormon will be Elected President

I just read a really great forum article about Mitt Romney and the chance he will have being elected President because he is a Mormon. It's interesting to me that this is even an issue in this day and age. Why do we not hear about the churches that all of the other candidates go to? Or do they go at all?

Anyway, this forum was conducted in Florida for some of the nation's leading journalists. It is the Pew Forum's Biannual Faith Angle Conference -- on religion, politics and public life. This transcript was entitled: Mormonism and Democratic Politics: Are They Compatible? I thought it was a pretty fair assessment and interesting to read.

If you want to read anything about what Mormons believe -- you can get the real information (not the media's interpretation) at Mormon.org.

Quote: Gaining Eternal Life

"Some men are willing to die for their faith but will not fully live for it. Christ both lived and died for us. By walking in his steps and through his atonement we can gain the greatest gift of all -- eternal life -- which is that kind of life of the great Eternal One, our Father in heaven." -- Ezra Taft Benson, "Jesus Christ -- Gifts and Expectations, BYU Devotional", 10 December 1974

Marie Osmond's Response to Al Sharpton

I heard that Marie Osmond was on both Larry King Live and The View and gave some of her responses to the negative comments by Al Sharpton about Mormons and Mitt Romney. I found and read the transcripts of each show. If you're interested, I'll include the links below.

Anyway, I hope that all of the press about the situation will help clear up the misunderstandings about the Mormon beliefs -- and that the term "Mormon" is just a nickname -- not the actual name of the Church -- which is actually The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Catholics and Evangelicals Leap to Defend Mitt Romney

I was very happy to hear about the support Catholics and Evangelicals have given to Mitt Romney and the Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
"Extraordinarily bigoted" was how Romney described Sharpton's comment made during a debate on religion held Monday in New York City, where Sharpton said, "as for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so don't worry about that, that's a temporary situation."

In the Deseret News today we read:
The Catholic League called for Sharpton to "be held accountable for his bigoted outburst" and suggesting it "should finish his career," just as Don Imus' recent racist statements resulted in the cancellation of his radio show. Sharpton was among Imus' harshest critics.

Kiera McCaffrey, the New York City-based league's director of communications, said Mormons are experiencing what Catholics did when John F. Kennedy ran for president in 1960.

The Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical minister who heads the National Clergy Council, issued a statement calling on Sharpton to "immediately apologize to Mr. Romney and the good people of the LDS Church and repent before God for such sinful hubris."

Schenck, who has met privately with Romney to talk about Mormonism, also said that "while many other Christian groups may have differences with LDS doctrine, to question someone else's sincerity of belief in God is the height of pharisaical arrogance."

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said in a statement that while Sharpton "is eager to play the political correctness card when it suits his purposes, he apparently sees nothing wrong with an offensive attack against Gov. Mitt Romney using his religion."

Mitt Romney and Rev. Sharpton

On the news tonight there were some clips of Rev. Al Sharpton seemingly mentioning Mitt Romney as a Mormon and that all of those who were "real" Christians would basically get rid of his as a candidate. Mitt Romney responded very well in my opinion. He said it was a comment that was probably not intended to be offensive, but that it could be construed to be bigoted and was unfortunate that Rev Sharpton said it.

Rev. Sharpton has not issued an apology but has instead tried to deny making the statements.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I am not offended by his comments, but I am a bit confused as to why some people think we are not Christians. The name of the Church is indicative of our beliefs. I read the Bible. I worship God and know Jesus Christ atoned for me -- to make it possible for me to return back to Him. Our beliefs teach us to follow the 10 commandments, to try and be more like Christ and to treat others as we would like to be treated.

So, for anyone who is confused as to what Mormons believe, please do not believe all of the misinformation in the media or what people say. If you want to know what Mormons believe, ask a Mormon. :-)

I do think this controversy will be very helpful in correcting some of that misinformation out there -- and letting people know what we really believe, not what has been presented in the media or through remarks made by those who may not have a correct understanding of our faith.

I do support Mitt Romney and have been very impressed by him. He is very well-spoken, business smart, intelligent and I think would take the country back into a good foundation. He's a problem-solver and I feel he has integrity.

I also think it's interesting that the media has not spotlighted the faith (or lack of faith) of any of the other candidates for President. I wonder why certain things are picked out and focused on for those in the news. Who chooses what to focus on?

Anyway, I hope that the Reverend Al Sharpton will take this opportunity to learn what members of the LDS Church really believe and will try to correct the things which were misspoken rather than perpetuating the misinformation.

Hiring Marketing Students

Hi all --

I'm looking for a couple of marketing students who would like to earn money this summer (on commission). I have a CD about The Testaments (LDS Film) and need creative marketing for it. I want people who love the film, love the LDS culture, can think outside the box, and want flexibility in their schedules.

I have a list of about 50 ways we can market the CD, but don't have time myself to do the marketing.

If you're interested, let me know -- romayallen (at) hotmail.com.

The Testaments - Fireside Available

The new LDS Church movie -- The Testaments: Of One Fold and One Shepherd is now available on DVD. There is a fireside that was done by Ane Marie and Tomas Kofod (the man who portrayed the Savior in the film). The fireside entitled "Of One Fold and One Shepherd" contains the powerful conversion stories and experiences that Tomas had behind the scenes of The Testaments. He shares how the Lord tutored him and prepared him to play the role.

A great gift for anyone -- it's available now as a download exclusively through LDS Audio. If you would like to pre-order a CD, you can purchase through Latter-day Light Books. If you have seen The Testaments -- you're going to want to hear this fireside!

Tomas and Ane Marie are very good friends of mine -- and each time I have listened to this fireside, I am touched by the way the Lord is in charge -- and how He has a role for each of us. Both Tomas and Ane Marie have powerful testimonies and you will feel the Spirit as you hear about their conversions to the LDS Church, their experiences and miracles the Lord performed during the making of The Testaments.

My Film Debut - The Testaments: Of One Fold and One Shepherd

Hi all -- I just was notified that you can purchase "The Testaments: Of One Fold and One Shepherd" through the LDS Catalog. It's only $4.50 for the DVD. Anyway, the reason I tell you about it is because it was my film debut (I was village person #61 in the film). I kind of laugh about it because I'm only in 1 scene but it was really cool to be in it and see the behind the scenes of filmmaking. My very good friend Tomas Kofod played the role of Christ in the film, and his wife, Ane Marie (one of my best friends in this whole wide world!) was also in it as an extra (and she designed some of the costumes as well).

Anyway, it's a great film, the people involved were very nice and hard working. I loved being involved plus it has a powerful message.
