Identity Theft Threats and Free Credit Reports

It seems that every time I turn around I'm hearing about another huge identity theft crisis. I'd scoff if it were not such a serious problem -- and one which there does not seem to be any true security.

Microsoft just launched 117 lawsuits against unnamed defendants for "phishing". Phishing is when someone sends out emails as if they were from banks or other legitimate organizations -- asking for personal information.

Of course, you can protect your personal information through firewalls, virus software, not responding to email requests from anyone asking for your personal information (FYI -- no legitimate company will do this!), shredding personal documents, not ordering things online from companies who don't have a good reputation, not telling people your social security number or paying with a credit card over a cell phone. The problem is that even with all of the care in the world, we are still at risk.

Lexis-Nexus (one of the world's information leaders) was hacked and hundreds of thousands of people had their identity information stolen. A few months ago a laptop was stolen from a California university containing over 100,000 social security numbers. According to the FCC over 27 million Americans have fallen victim to identity theft.

So what do we do? Well, the only thing we can really do is to protect ourselves as best we can, and then keep track of our credit reports to see if anything suspicious comes up. You can now get a free copy of your credit report each year. (Actually you can get a free report from each of the credit reporting agencies, so you can space them out and get 3 each year.)

Get more information about your free credit report through the Federal Trade Commission site. This is a new law, so check out the FTC to find out when and where you can get your free report.

Benefits of Genealogy Research

I hear success stories just about every day, of people connecting with ancestors through Ancestry.com. But I also get to hear about other benefits from the genealogy service. An article in an Arizona Newspaper described a man whose father had passed away in 2001. Someone had found his father's dog tags (which had been lost over 60 years before) in the desert and was trying to find the owner of the dog tags to return them. A ameteur genealogist read about the search, tracked down the family through Ancestry.com and was able to get the dog tags back to the son over the Easter weekend. It's a wonderful story and just another reason I love genealogical research.

Web Hosting Problems

Web hosting is one of the things that can cause a lot of stress. Today I found out that one of my sites has been unexpectedly placed on hold by the registrar and someone else has their data up on my site. Every day it is down I'm losing money and the registrar does not respond to my inquiries. I have the domain until 2006 and the web hosting has been paid, so what's the problem?

The problem comes from getting hosting from companies without doing much background checking. I chose to go with this particular host about a year ago and they took care of the domain registration / renewal. This is the first time we've gone through the renewal process.

I've hosted through many companies and have found good and bad from each. But www.GoDaddy.com is one of the best and most reliable -- so as soon as I get this mess straightened out, I'll be switching this site over. It's not worth saving a few dollars each month if there are going to be problems with the host being down, renewals not getting done, etc.

Linked In - Making Connections

For all of you who are not familiar with Linked In -- it's a great resource for meeting people, making connections, looking for people to hire, and finding work opportunities. Basically you sign up, include your education background, work experience and then invite your personal contacts to join. Then you'll find people who are connected to those you know. It's an easy way to get referrals.

I have a friend I invited to join who signed up, was looking for a job, found a job and applied. It happens that I gave my friend a recommendation. The employer knew my brother (who also recommended my friend.) She got the job the next day. The employer knew I wouldn't recommend someone who wasn't going to do a good job and he trusted my opinion. It's working out great for both of them. All that happened because I knew someone who knew someone. It's a great resource and if you're going to be successful at networking, you need to join Linked In and get started.

Secrets to Making Money on the Internet

I attended a seminar yesterday by Kathleen Gage about "Success Strategies using the Internet to Gain Position Visibility and Profit for your Business." With my background in internet marketing I wanted to see if there were new insights I could gain as well as to analyze the way in which Kathleen conducted her seminars.

I have to say I was impressed by Kathleen's presentation style. She interfaces well with the audience, has a charming and fun personality and knows how to keep the attention of attendees. The information she presented was good (but not much new for me). There were a few things she presented which were not the best ways for internet marketing - although they would still work. As I was listening I was thinking about how I could take her company to the next level. Right now she has a page rank of 4/10 in Google on kathleengage.com, a 3/10 on streetsmartsmarketing.com and only 1/10 for 101waystogetyourfootinthedoor.com. She's doing things fairly well now, but with the knowledge I gained at 10x Marketing, and doing Website Consulting, I noticed that there are things she is not doing which could benefit her immensely -- such as in-depth keyword and market research and website analysis -- in looking at her websites for 5 minutes I can see about 10 things she could change quickly which would give her much higher visibility to search engines and much more traffic.

I love the challenge of taking someone's company website -- and spending a day or two researching their industry and doing analysis -- then giving them a report of 10-50 things they can change in order to get better results in search engines. Website analysis is one of the services I will be offering to my business and life coaching clients at a discount.

Kathleen did ask a couple of questions which are important for anyone looking to conduct business online. I think the most important question when analyzing your website and business is: What is your greatest challenge in internet marketing? Is it knowledge? Is it finances? Is it time? What keeps you from being more successful online? Is it just that you don't know quite what to do?

Anyway, I felt it was a good use of a few hours and I appreciated Kathleen's presentation. I would recommend her seminars and ebooks as good resources for those starting out or those wanting to improve their online visibility but don't have much money to invest.

A Genealogy Resource - Vital Records Online

If you're interested in genealogy and want to find vital records about your ancestors, check out my website Vital Records Online. You can search by state and learn about how to do genealogy research. You can also get a free trial for Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com. It's a great way to do genealogy online.

LDSAudio.com to Offer Support to Emerging and Established LDS Recording Artists

OREM, Utah, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- LDSAudio.com, the only diversified download site on the Web for digital LDS audio books, talks, and music is joining with the LDS music establishment to help foster growth in the industry and make the music of talented LDS artists available to a wider audience. The company will co-sponsor two major industry events in the coming months: Highway Records' Utah's Next talent search and the PEARL Awards, a Grammy-style production of the Faith Centered Music Association (FCMA) "recognizing excellence in enriching entertainment."

In sponsoring these events, LDSAudio.com will provide digital download services to Highway Records and FCMA. For Highway Records, the Web site will make the Utah's Next award winner's 4-track album available online for public consumption. For the PEARL Awards, the company will accept digital submissions from nominated artists and provide online sampling and feedback services both for judges and the general public.

The company currently offers online music distribution through its website (http://www.ldsaudio.com) for most of the major LDS producers, including Deseret Book's entertainment labels (Excel, Highway Records, Shadow Mountain, etc.), Sounds of Zion, Tantara, Prime and others.

"As a unique distribution outlet for LDS music, audio programs, and eventually film and video, we think it's important to be an active participant in the growing LDS entertainment and publishing industries," says Neal Bergstrom, VP of Operations and Content Acquisition at LDSAudio. "We certainly can't take the place of record companies in developing and promoting new talent, but we believe we can play a role in creating wider distribution for existing talent, and in helping new artists get some exposure as well."

About LDSAudio.com
Founded in 2004 LDSAudio.com is part of the LDS Media Network, a division of Infobase Media, LLC focused on the LDS market. Continual Learning: Investing in Employees

Hey all,

I just wanted to have you read an article my brother, Paul Allen, wrote for Connect Magazine. Connect is designed for entrepreneurs and covers topics that are vital for success. The article Paul wrote for the February 2005 issue is entitled, Investing in Employees: Designing a Curriculum for Key Executives. It explains why continual education and learning give you an edge in business, and as an executive you should find ways to encourage employees to expand their knowledge base. Anyway, read the article and let me know what you think.

Curt Allen, Paul Allen, Brad Pelo in the News - Top 100 Venture Entrepreneurs

Congratulations to two of my brothers (Curt Allen, Paul Allen) and one brother-in-law (Brad Pelo) for recognition in the industry. I knew they were pretty great, but it's nice to know others feel the same way. (big grin).

PRESS RELEASE:

vSpring Capital Announces the 2005 v|100 Class - A Peer-Selected Community Designed to Foster Collaborative Partnering and Mentoring Among Top Entrepreneurs in the Region

Wednesday March 2, 11:00 am ET

The 2005 v|100 (vSpring Capital Top 100 Venture Entrepreneurs) is Comprised of 'Individuals Most Likely to Lead a Successful Tech/Biotech Venture in the Next 5-7 Years'

SALT LAKE CITY, March 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- vSpring Capital today announced the 2005 class of the vSpring Capital Top 100 Venture Entrepreneurs, also known as the v|100.

The v|100 was conceived by vSpring as a tool to recognize the region's outstanding entrepreneurs and to support and promote partnering and collaboration among top entrepreneurs in the region.

"The v|100 has been an effective method to help vSpring and the community to recognize leadership and innovative excellence and increase networking in the entrepreneurial community within the state," said Dinesh Patel, managing director of vSpring Capital.

Each year, members of the Utah business community are asked by vSpring to nominate individuals with ties to the state of Utah who are most likely to lead a successful startup venture in the next five to seven years in the IT (information technology) or biotech industries in a chief executive or chief technical officer role.

These nominees are then invited to participate in a confidential online survey to vote for the top 10 individuals they feel would most likely meet the selection criteria. Nominees garnering the most votes from their peers in this annual process are then elected into the v|100. The result is a community-nominated, peer-selected group of the top IT and biotech entrepreneurs in the state. These individuals are then invited to participate in an array of ongoing interactions throughout the year designed to provide increased exposure, resources and collaboration among this important group.

"Running a startup can be a lonely experience," said Eric Jacobsen,
managing partner of Utah- and Connecticut-based private equity firm Dolphin II and v|100 member for both 2005 and 2004. "I want to interact, communicate and talk with other entrepreneurs that are dealing with similar problems and challenges. Membership in the v|100 offers access to like-minded entrepreneurs and that has been a very positive experience for me."

Facts about the 2005 class of the v|100

The 2005 class of the v|100 includes a unique combination of dynamic young entrepreneurs, technology thought leaders and experienced leaders in the technology and biotechnology industries. This year 42 new members were inducted into the v|100. As a whole the 2005 class of the v|100 has raised more than $4 billion in capital assets and created more than 15,000 new jobs during their careers.

A complete list of members in the 2005 v|100 is below. Be advised that positions/companies noted were current as of the date of the compilation of the 2005 v|100 list of members. For additional information about the v|100 or vSpring Capital, please contact vSpring's Dennis Wood at 801-942-8999(wk) or dennis@vspring.com, or David Politis of Politis Communications at 801-523-3730 or dpolitis@politis.com.

Affiliate Programs

If you have your own website and want to earn some extra money, you should seriously consider joining an affiliate program. For those of you who do not know what an affiliate program is -- well, basically it is getting paid for marketing (sending customers) to a specific store.

I am an affiliate for many companies. It's important to join programs where the products they offer complement your website, but do not compete with you. For example: My website Vital Records Online is a website about genealogy, finding ancestors online, state by state information about vital records. I send most of my traffic to Ancestry.com and I get a commission whenever anyone signs up for their service or buys a genealogy book from them. That way I just maintain my site and don't have to sell any actual physical products.

I also have a website for people who want to lose weight called AAA Lose Weight Now. I've included information about weight loss products, exercise videos, sports supplements, etc. I do have a few affilate programs there and it's always fun to get a check.

There are several good affiliate companies who can help you find programs which will fit with your website. Linkshare.com and Commission Junction are among the best. They both have hundreds of programs they run for mainstream companies. However there are many individual affiliate programs. Just do a search on "affiliate programs" through Google and you'll see how many companies out there who are turning to this type of marketing. It's a great way to get new customers for your own business by setting up your own affiliate program, and a great way to make some extra money for website owners.

MyFamily.com - Websites for Families

I've been thinking about my family a lot for the past few days -- my 5 brothers and 2 sisters and parents who are serving our Church on an LDS mission. There are over 40 of us including nieces and nephews and in-laws. I have such a tremendous amount of love for each of them, but it's hard to stay in touch as much as I would like. We're all very busy. My brother Paul Allen, started a company called MyFamily.com which provides websites for families - a way to stay in contact with each other.

MyFamily.com offers such a great service for families. You can create a family website in just a few minutes, send out email invitations to all of your family members and start posting messages. It is the best way to keep in touch with family from far away. You can post photos, news items, have reminders email you about upcoming birthdays and events. You can customize the site for your personal needs.

Anyway, the websites used to be free, but I think there is a $20 charge per year or something -- very reasonable. My family has been using our website since the beginning and it's so much fun when you get on and have your 8 year old niece or 15 year old nephew writing to the rest of the family. I love logging in and reading about what's going on in the lives of my family members. We have a website for my parents and siblings, one for my mom's side of the family, and one for my dad's side of the family. If you don't have one yet, I recommend checking it out and starting your own family site for your family. It's a great gift to start up the site and then simply invite your family to get involved. Then you post something once and you don't have to worry about notifying everyone, because notices can automatically be sent. It is the best way I have found to keep up on what everyone is doing, but it does take commitment for family members to take a few minutes and post news items. Once you get into the habit of checking your site every day, just like checking your email, you'll see how MyFamily.com can bring your own family closer together.

Paul Allen - Genius Internet Entrepreneur

Hey all,

My brother, Paul Allen, is one of the most brilliant minds of our day. I may be biased, but I hear it from everyone who knows him as well, so I think it must be accurate. Paul has founded many successful companies including MyFamily.com, Ancestry.com, Infobases Inc., LDS Media, 10x Marketing, and more. He is in the process of creating several more. He know the technology industry better than anyone I know (except perhaps for my other brother Curt Allen, who founded Folio Corp, and Agilix.)

The best thing about Paul is that he is willing to share his vast expertise freely with others. He has a blog that any internet entrepreneur would benefit from reading. Not only does he analyze the industry, but he shares his experience about how to be successful. If you are starting a new business, want to be an internet entrepreneur, and want to learn from the best -- Paul Allen -- his latest website is http://www.infobaseventures.com/ and you can read about his companies and latest business ventures. Then for more information read Paul Allen's Blog.

Anyway, trust me -- it will be well worth your time to read! I know he's my brother, but I learn so much from him and want others to benefit as well.

RoMay Allen - Internet Entrepreneur

Hello all!

Welcome to my blog.

Just to give you a bit of background. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My parents started us out young to get us to develop our individual talents and I have been working since I was very young. We always had a family business and other businesses have branched off from there.

My brother Paul Allen started companies such as Infobases, Inc., MyFamily.com, Ancestry.com, Infobase Ventures, LDS Audio, LDS Media, 10x Marketing,WorldHistory.com and more. My brother Curt Allen started Folio Corp., and now runs Agilix. They are both incredibly brilliant and are industry leaders. I have been priviledged to work with both of them at various times and have been able to glean a little knowledge for myself.
I have another brother, Mark Allen, who is a media genius and has his own video production company - ASOLO Productions. He has produced media with great people such as James Earl Jones, Jake Garn, and President Jimmy Carter to name a few. His work is incredible and I have not seen anyone do better in producing uplifting media.

My younger brother Rob Allen builds beautiful log furniture and does most of his business through ebay and his webstore Montana Log Outfitters.

Needless to say, we all have the entrepreneurial spirit. So, with that said, here's a bit of my personal background. I've run several businesses and have managed many projects. I'm moving more into a creative environment now and actually have several contract projects for designing, writing, and am in the process of building a life coaching business. I hope the things I have to share here will inspire you or give you some insights on your own ventures.
